Using Makeup Effectively

Many books and online resources are available to help you apply makeup effectively. It's also a good idea to read up on stage makeup techniques, which can be used to enhance your role.

Stage makeup is used to create a look that's exaggerated so that it’ll read over long distances. It can be effective for some roles but can be inadvertently comical at close range, so discretion is advised.

Vampires and hookers are two roles that benefit from a more theatrical approach to make up. Your hooker, for example, may have false eyelashes, bright blue eyeshadow, and dark lip liner. Your partner’s vampire may have alabaster skin, blood dripping from the corner of his mouth, fangs, black eyeliner, dark shadows under his eyes, or deep hollows in his cheeks. When you’re playing a fantasy role, your makeup doesn't need to be restricted to what looks good in bright daylight.

There are websites that allow you to upload a head shot of yourself so that you can try out a variety of hairstyles and makeup variations. Experimenting digitally can save you time and money when trying to find the perfect lipstick, blush, or hair color for your role.

Men instinctively resist wearing makeup, but if your partner’s role would benefit from a little, it may be worth a shot tring to convincing him to wear some. Obviously you’re more likely to be successful if the makeup you’re asking him to wear is fake blood dripping from the corner of his mouth than if you want him to don blue eyeshadow and false eyelashes.
